...Ojo del Mar fits the low-key local vibe ... Crushed gravel walkways lit by bamboo lanterns wind through the jungle to the main lodge, an open-air bamboo structure built by Mark. The feeling is quiet, peaceful, and reverential of the forrest surrounding. ....Mark and Nico's eco-ethics are pragmatic, a development of their practice of living lightly amid the Osa's robust yet fragile ecosystem.

Nico authored the book 'Living in the Jungle: A handbook of Sustainability Living on the Osa Peninsula'.... Mark considers the structures he builds to be an expression of an ethical consciousness born of local conditions.... Mark likes to say his buildings feel "right".

"My mission is to inspire people and to help them get access to their deeper understanding, their intuition of what is wrong and what is right. To me, it feels good not to create a toxic environment with a building. We are so used to artificial, industrial living that we become immune to nature. I want to take people back to the roots, to the tribe, to the ground." Back to the ecological choreography of the planet.

Thank you for everything, we couldn’t have dreamed of a nicer place to be on earth. Until coming to Ojo del mar, the expression ‘Pura Vida’ seemed like a cheesy cliche from tourist guide books. I think here we discovered the meaning of ‘Pura vida’: the simple luxuries of good food (delicious, healthy & fresh), clean air, and a life harmonious with the environment around us
– things that are harder and harder to obtain in our world. Pura Vida !

I came in search of the jaguar (‘el tigre’) …
Between the showers of rain I looked …
But, as expected, Costa Rica’s top carnivore stayed hidden …

Instead I found:

- A magical beach house where I could lie in the cooling tropical breeze, breathing in the perfume of a thousand blossoms and hearing the symphony of insects, birds, monkeys and sweet gulf waves.

- The healthy, artful and welcoming sensibilities of Nico & Mark, who have realized a lovely, earth-friendly dream in partnership and harmony.

- Relaxed, open, stimulating and laughter-sprinkled conversation over plates full of delicious, life-giving food on a long table beneath a high woven roof, with the land and its treasures supporting us all.

- Stories of brief glimpses of ‘el jaguar’, told first and secondhand with a bright spark in the eye and a quiver of excitement on the tongue.

- Long hikes through the green tunnels of the rain forest and leisurely strolls along the stone strewn beaches, among scuttling crabs and below screaching macaws.
